Queen, Soldiers and Workers.
Soldiers of a common Australian subterranean termite species (Nasutitermes spp.) are visually different to the workers, with a pointy snout and darker head. The soldiers protect the rest of the colony. This species is common in NSW and well known to cause extensive damage to timbers in service (houses, fences...) in NSW. This species prefers to nest in mounds or old tree stumps and one variety (Nasutitermes walkeri) makes aerial (arboreal) nests in trees.
